  • Explore the underground streets of Asakusa
  • Engrave your name in your own chopsticks! (Kappabashi add-on)

What to Expect

Visiting Asakusa is like taking a step back in time to a Tokyo that existed years ago. Because of that, it's one of our favourite places to explore! We'll start the day with the best view of Nakamise dori, before heading down to explore the shopping streets ourselves. We'll start with street food favourites such as candied strawberries and curry pan, before ending up at Sensoji temple. We'll explore the history of the temple, and our guides will help you discover your luck with omikuji, and teach you how to make a prayer at the temple if you'd like to try it!

After visiting the temple, we'll explore the surrounding streets where you can visit kimono shops, find the strongest matcha ice cream in Japan, and more before heading to hoppy street for a rest! Hoppy street is a lively restaurant street named after it's signature drink—Hoppy! (Hoppy is an almost non-alcholic beer that is usually mixed with Shochu) Here you can experience a Japanese izakaya (a Japanese style restaurant/bar), and try Hoppy 🍻

To end the tour, we'll explore the underground of Asakusa station (the oldest subway in Japan!) and have an optional goodbye drink at a secret location 🥷

If you choose to add the Kappabashi add-on, then we will walk (note it's about 15 minutes!) to Kappabashi (kitchen street)! Here we'll explore Japan's premium knife stores, cute ceramic shops, and can even have chopsticks engraved with your name. For any fan of Japanese kitchenware, or if you're just looking for some of the best souvenirs in the city, this add on is a must!

Taro 🇯🇵

I've always loved travel, but thought traditional tours felt too impersonal—so I'm on a mission to change that! With my tours, I hope you'll feel like you're being guided around by a local friend. I’ve lived in Tokyo for over five years and specialize in old Tokyo, seasonal flowers, anime spots, izakaya hopping, speakeasies and craft breweries. I’m always happy to customize and bring my camera to help capture the memories!

I’m Taro, a Tokyo local who loves showing people around this crazy city. When I travel, meeting new people is my favorite part. So now that you’re in my town, I get to be that friend for you! Growing up here, I can take you to the real local spots. So my specialty tours are bar hopping and karaoke tours, nature trips, and the off-the-beaten-path, underground tours. But just let me know what you're looking for, Tokyo has something for everyone!

FAQ's

1. Can you accommodate special food requests, such as allergies or dietary restrictions?

We are able to make this tour vegetarian! But unfortunately, all other dietary restrictions (vegan, koscher, gluten free etc.) we are unable to accommodate. We also don't recommend this tour for anyone with severe allergies as we cannot guarantee the ingredients or lack of cross contamination of any dish.

2. What should you wear for this tour?
Sensoji Temple doesn't have a dress code, but this tour includes a lot of walking (particularly if you do the Kappabashi add-on!), so we recommend dressing comfortably! In summer Japan can also get very hot, so we recommend bringing a hat or an umbrella for shade as this tour takes place mainly outside.

3. Do I need to bring cash?
Bringing cash is recommended, as some stores may not be able to accept card. These days, most stores do accept card (I'd say around 90%!) but it's still a good idea to bring some! You may also want to bring coins to make an offering at the shrine (5 yen and 50 yen coins are the luckiest!).
